"Creativity takes courage" - Henri Matisse
TREATY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Laidlaw School and my art classroom is located on Treaty One Land. This land is the home of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene people and of the Métis Nations. The harsh Canadian government broke the promises made by them and the Indigenous peoples who took care of this land.
This land makes me feel so grateful. This land is a place that I can make and show off my art.
We have to learn to be thankful for this land that Indigenous peoples have provided for us. We must appreciate them because if not for them, we might not have this land or this art.
As artists, as students, and as human beings we can always make this land a better place and fix our mistakes.
It isn't too late.

Dragon Eyes
Imagine that you are face to face with a giant dragon. The creature's eyes open slowly, revealing it's true beauty. Middle Years students designed their own unique dragons. Some of these dragons spit fire, some rainbow and sparkles, while others still live on clouds, mountain peaks, and even underground. We hope you have fantastic tales from your encounter with these magnificent beasts today!
"We like the colour and creativity we got to add to our dragon eyes" - Middle Years Students
"Art makes me feel whole and grounded but free from the world" - Adrianna
"I am an artist because art makes me happy" - Ben
"Art makes me feel calm. I love to express myself with art. It's an escape from the universe into another dimension. An artist is someone who can make anything out of everything. Creativity is in us all and a true artist could express it all through art" - Jennifer
"I am an artist because there are endless possibilities to choose from...including from the HEART" - Shenae
"Art is calming. It relieves my stress and worries" - Sabastian

Dragon Eggs
These tiny dragon hatchlings required precision and care! Each dragon egg went through a unique creation process that students are excited to share with you. As for the dragon hatchlings – we can’t promise they will be as easy to care for as a dog or cat.
"The process of making these dragon eggs was like hatching them ourselves!" - Grade 5/6 Students

Colour Painting
From learning painting techniques to studying artist, Monica Valentine, the grade 5/6 exploration of Colour Theory was an excellent journey! Here are some thoughts from students:

Piece of My Life Sculptures
Each colour in the thoughtfully created sculptures below stands for a memory, story, or event important to the artist. Students used problem solving strategies to make their sculptures stand up and used their own life journey to connect and inspire their artwork.
"Art makes me feel inspired because I'm always making new things and I like seeing everyone else's work" - Halle

Black History Month - Artist Study
Each student studied an artist during Black History Month, creating a special biographical art piece to contribute to our display. Asking questions, making connections, understanding the “why” behind the art process, listening, research skills, and viewing others’ art was at the core of this learning experience.
"My favourite kind of art to make is abstract art - colour and patterns all around the place. I like it because I find it calming and generally fun to look at. I was inspired by people like Pablo Picasso and Nick Cave. However, abstract art doesn't need to be paint or colouring, it can be made by beads or buttons like how Nick Cave did" - Parsa
"An artist is someone who can keep going" - Ben
"An artist is someone who doesn't give up. There are a lot of mistakes or set backs when making art. I am an artist because I try my best and I don't give up" - Halle

Camouflage Art
Students received a small piece of paper with a pre-drawn design. Their challenge was to use art elements and principles that we have studied to camouflage this piece of paper completely. This is a great warm up activity, and a fun art challenge to try at home too!
Fun Fact: If you took the pieces of each square from each artwork, and put them all together, they would fit together to create the linework for famous art pieces including The Mona Lisa, Sunflowers, and The Scream!
"Can you find the hidden square?" - Grade 5/6 Students
"Art makes me feel calm and happy" - C.J.
"My favourite type of art to make is pastel and cute. Art makes me feel creative!" - Tyra
"I enjoyed the dragon and the camouflage piece. The camo one was my first time drawing 'realistic' and my first try with watercolours" - Jennifer

Poetry & Art
Grade 5/6 Students worked to create “Home Poems” from the heart with Mrs. Aiello. The thoughtful stanzas in the poems are meant to evoke imagery. The following artworks are based directly on relevant stanzas from the poetry written. The emotions and feeling associated with HOME come through beautifully!
"One of my favourite art pieces that I've made was the collage inspired by my home poem. This was my first time making a collage and it really portrayed the main idea of my poem. I loved getting to flip through magazines and cut pictures out. The whole experience of making a collage is really amazing!" - Ruby
"Art to me is like a check point to just stop and relax. Art isn't stressful, but still has emotion to it. What art is varies depending on the person, and to me it's just a calm, stress free escape." - Parsa

Scratch Art
The Grade 7 Students studied various ways to utilize space, including negative/positive, in the distance, and up close! The concept of space is very important to us. As artists we learn to use space, we occupy space, and we make the spaces we are in work for us (especially during these unprecedented times)! We hope you enjoy the various ways we chose to use space in our art.
"We liked trying new tools and ways of making art" - Grade 7 Students
"You can't erase so...you just have to go for it" - Grade 7 Students

The Other Side Art
Imagine you are walking down the street and the building ahead has a large broken wall. People rush past you, but don’t seem to notice what you see. What do you see? Here are some of the creative ideas that the Grade 7 Students came up with:
"We are proud of the cool themes we came up with and hope you enjoy figuring them out!" - Grade 7 Students

Pottery Process
Grade 5/6 Students are currently working on pottery. Art is all about the process and we have a fantastic start, as pictured below. We are currently waiting for our designs to be ready to put in the kiln. The next step will be: glazing. Students are encouraged to talk about next steps, their designs, and colour (glaze) ideas!
"My favourite art to make is pottery because I like to smooth and cut it" - Lauren
"I enjoy pottery because it is my first time. I love clay!" - Labeeka
